Martes de Galería Turned One. The Shows on Its Route Run for Weeks.

The original idea was practical. In the late 1980s a group of Old San Juan gallerists agreed to keep their doors open until 10:00 pm on the first Tuesday of every month, "in an effort to promote culture and art on the slowest day of the week for businesses," according to La Voz del Paseo Boricua. The tradition went quiet for roughly fifteen years. It came back in Santurce, where the artists had moved in the meantime.

The revived Martes de Galería held its first Santurce edition on October 7, 2025. That makes this week's edition on October 6, 2026 the end of its first full year. Twelve months in, one thing about the circuit is clear from its own listings. Most of the art on the route did not open on the Tuesday, and most of it is still up after the Tuesday ends.

A Year of First Tuesdays

The revival is a joint project of two Santurce spaces. Trailer Park Projects and Constructo "unieron fuerzas" to bring galleries, artists and alternative spaces into one circuit, according to the program's About page. Alexis Figueroa of Trailer Park Proyects and Javier Olmeda of Constructo lead it. El Nuevo Día covered the relaunch the weekend before the first edition.

Accounts of where the tradition started differ slightly. La Voz places the first version in Old San Juan in the late 1980s. The organizers' own history describes the tradition as active in the 1990s and 2000s. The organizers also name the projects that kept the habit going in between: Noches de Galería, Santurce es Ley, Art-Hop 2024 and El Kilómetro 0.2.

The ground rules are simple. It happens on the first Tuesday of the month, and every event on the circuit is free and open to the public. The October 6 edition listed 45 events, covering openings, exhibitions, open studios, music, markets and walking tours. The program website organizes the night around trolley stops, and each stop anchors a cluster of venues:

  • Cerra, the first stop, serving Calle Cerra
  • Petrus
  • Constructo
  • Pública
  • Villa Cangrejos
  • Corona
  • La Respuesta
  • Ciudadela
  • MAC
  • MUSAN
  • La Goyco
  • Miramar
  • Sagrado

The site does not post trolley hours or a timetable. What it does post is a geography. The circuit reaches from Calle Cerra and Barrio El Gandul in one direction to Miramar and Sagrado in the other, a stretch most people would not walk in one evening.

The Openings Already Happened

The thesis shows up when you set the program's dates against the dates the shows actually opened. Three of the most substantial exhibitions on the October route opened earlier in September and stay up well past October 6.

Exhibition Artist Venue Opened On view through Visiting hours
Marina Lucía Nieves Cortés Galería Manifiesto=Arte, 1353 Avenida Ponce de León September 14 October 25, 2026 Monday to Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Materias Divergentes Ricardo Ávalo Sala de Arte de TUCOOP September 17, 6:00 p.m. October 17, 2026 By appointment
Diasporican Abstraction: Identities Beyond Representation See MAC listing MAC, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Puerto Rico September 26, 2026 March 28, 2027 Wednesday to Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

"Marina" is a watercolor study of Caribbean corals and marine life. El Adoquín Times reported that its slot in the October 6 program was a conversation about the exhibition, held three weeks after it opened.

"Materias Divergentes" has a dating discrepancy. The Martes de Galería listing labels it an "Apertura" on October 6 from 18:00 to 21:00. Revista Plástica dates the opening to September 17 and the run to September 17 through October 17. Either way, the show was already on view before the trolley came by.

MAC is the clearest case. The museum appeared on the October 6 map. Its posted public hours are Wednesday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and it is closed Monday and Tuesday. So a regular week offers five days to see "Diasporican Abstraction," and the exhibition runs until the end of March.

Read that way, the first Tuesday works as a monthly table of contents. It gathers shows that are already up and points the crowd toward them.

What Only Happens on the Night

If the walls stay up all month, the night itself carries the things that disappear when it ends. Those are the events listed as open studios, markets, pop-ups and talks.

On October 6 that meant BLKEYE opening its studio at Villa Cangrejos, 18:00 to 22:00. It also meant two Makers Market editions, one built around art at Constructo and one around jewelry at Villa Cangrejos. There was a pop-up at Parada Corona in the Corona Commercial Park on Calle Progreso. Chris Soto Studio showed "Pieles" at Ladybug Bar from 18:00 to 22:00. Instituto de Subcultura at 734 Calle Cerra opened its program at 6 p.m.

The main exhibition that night shows how the format works. Emmanuel F. Navarro Pizarro presented "Soledad al Sol," plein-air oil paintings in the luminist and naturalist tradition of Sorolla with Puerto Rico's light as the subject. Trailer Park Proyects and Constructo presented it as Proyecto EN2026, Archivo Casa Blanca. It was listed at Constructo, 1108 Avenida Las Palmas, from 18:00 to 22:00. The listing gives no closing date and no regular visiting hours afterward. Anyone who missed it should contact Constructo before assuming it is still up.

The full October map also shows how many kinds of venues the circuit now draws in. Alongside galleries such as Galería Petrus, Marca Ribe Galería, LA15 Centro Curatorial, 802 Espacio de Proyectos and Sala FAR at Fundación Ángel Ramos, the list includes Antigua Cervecería Corona, La Respuesta, MUSAN, Taller La Goyco, Teatro Y No Había Luz, Abracadabra Café Teatro, Restaurante El Gandul, Colmado Las Lolas on Calle Cerra, and bars such as La Santurcina and El Axolote. The site counts 19 restaurants, bars and shops among the participants. Many of those are places that keep regular hours on the other twenty-nine days of the month.

A Weekday Route Through the October Shows

Given the closing dates above, the rest of October falls into a sequence.

  1. By October 17. Book an appointment at Sala de Arte de TUCOOP for "Materias Divergentes." It has the shortest remaining run of the three, and Revista Plástica lists visits by appointment only.
  2. By October 25. Galería Manifiesto=Arte at 1353 Avenida Ponce de León keeps the widest window of the three, Monday through Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. A lunch hour is enough for "Marina."
  3. Any Wednesday through Sunday until March 28, 2027. MAC sits at Parada 18, and the museum's visitor page gives directions on the T5 bus from Avenida José V. Caro. With nearly six months left on "Diasporican Abstraction," it is the show most likely to reward a second visit.

None of the three requires the Tuesday crowd, and all three are listed on the program that draws it.

November 3, If the Pattern Holds

The organizers describe the program as monthly, "cada primer martes del mes." By that rule the next two editions fall on Tuesday, November 3 and Tuesday, December 1, 2026. As of this week, martesdegaleria.org still shows only the October 6 program, and neither date has been announced with a venue list.

The site has a "Crea mi ruta" tool that lets visitors save individual events into a personal route. The search filters also sort the night by hour, before 8:00 p.m. or 8:00 p.m. onward, and by stop. When the November program goes up, those filters will show which listings are new openings and which are shows that have been on the walls since mid-October.

Following Santurce's gallery calendar is one way we keep up with the parts of San Juan that change week to week, from the trolley stops on Calle Cerra to the museum at Parada 18. If you are thinking about a home within walking distance of this circuit, or a pied-à-terre for the months when the city's cultural calendar is fullest, HECO PROPERTIES offers discreet, founder-led guidance. Request a Private Consultation, and we will talk through the Santurce blocks that suit how you spend your evenings.
